Abstract
It is my clinical impression that myopia and exotropia are much commoner in this country than in the western hemisphere of the globe, and that early treatment of the strabismus tends to be neglected in this country.
The accommodation convergence relationship has been well¢¥ elucidated so far the cause of the strabismus is concerned. The refractive status of young. children is, known to be mostly hyperopic up to school age, and then becomes less hyperopic resulting emmetropia or myopia as they get older. Even in cases of exotropia; withmyopia, the patients might have been, therefore, hyperopic during their early life. It is, consequently, conceivable that the manifestation of exotropia in these cas, 8s might be masked by hyperopia for some time until they become old enough, to be, myopic. On the other hand it is generally accepted that the exotropia is a date manifestation of exophoria in most cases. In any case the exotropia usually manifests itself far later in life than the esotropia does.
The masking effect of hyperopia in the manifestation of exotropia and the late occurrence of exotropia in myopia may have so missies both parents and phys clans that the attention has not been properly paid to the strabismus. problems in this country, As a result, the importance of early treatment of strabismus has been ¢¥apt to be ignored, and visual function of patients has been greatly impaired every after having the proper surgery done.
The symposium, therefore, would not attempt to bring up any new faces Tin the strabismus field but to stimulate the members of the Society to, pay more attention for the problem than ever before.
Despite the importance of the problem, the time allocated to the participants".¢¥ is limited so that the whole- field on strabismus can not be covered in this symposium. The concomitant heterotrop as will be discussed at this time.
